Wholesome Foods, I Love You... Is That OK?

Touted "Slacker for millennial women", WFILY is the award winning comedy about a neurotic yoga teacher who sets out in search of love… at her favorite organic supermarket. A coming of age story - for people of a certain age - Wholesome Foods, I Love You... Is That OK? reminds us all that love, laughter, and a willingness take risks are the best remedies of all.“[...] With a sly satiric sensibility that recalls the absurdist comedy of Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project and — in Hovsepian’s hilarious onscreen musings — the stammering, stream-of-consciousness whimsy of comedian Ellen DeGeneres...” - THE TORONTO STAR

Where do I even begin? This show is my baby. While it's customary to include a director’s statement, this project is unique in that we have four directors. So I thought, hey, I created this. I wrote it. I’m the EP. I star in it. Why not take the lead on this part too? I can honestly say that I’ve never been as proud of any of my creations as I am of this one. Never have I worn so many hats on one project alone…and never has the creative process been so deeply fulfilling. I’m talking soul-nourishing stuff here. The process has come with huge learning curves for me, both personally and as an artist. Both in terms of learning to let go and trust the process, and also in terms of knowing when to put my foot down, to really stand my ground. I’ve learned the importance of ensuring that collaborative work feels mutually beneficial. And that, as a neurotic-only-child-control-freak, it’s impossible to do it all alone. I’ve learned that having passionate, trustworthy co-creators is everything - especially when those co-creators are working professionals who are accustomed to being paid union rates, but are willing to volunteer their time to help bring your vision to life. I’ve cultivated a more robust understanding of what it means to express true gratitude, and how amazing it feels to have the unwavering support of so many brilliantly talented people who believe all that you do. I realized early on that the key to avoiding discord was to keep people looped in - to ask for input, to create space for contributors to throw their wackiest ideas out, for actors to improvise, to give everyone’s creativity room to breathe. And then to tune into my Self to figure out how to maintain the integrity of my vision, too. It was vital to me to create multi-dimensional characters instead of trying to fit each one into an easily labelled category as many shows do. That’s not real life, that’s not what being human is about. The more I spoke to women in our target audience about this need for multidimensionality within female characters, the more I realized how hungry viewers are for just that. I didn’t want to put pressure on myself - or on my actors - to have to create representations of humans that were wholly likable, but rather the goal was to let feelings flow, to let it get messy. I think we’re all doing our best in life, but we’re also making it up as we go along. There’s this constant pressure to make it seem like we’ve got it all together, like we’ve got it all figured out. There’s freedom in owning the uncertainty. Having lived with these characters for the past three years, I’m beyond excited to be launching them into this big old world of ours. I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll find their way into the hearts of whoever it is that needs them the most. - Krista Hovsepian
